Was the first Mother’s Day in 1870?
Activist and poet Julie Ward is thought to be one of the first women that brought this day into celebration. She suggested in 1870 that women stand up against the war. Her plea for peace spurred Boston to recognize mothers on the second day of June from then after. However it took 44 years before Mother’s Day was an official holiday! President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
A History of Colors
Carnations have long been one of the most popular flowers given to moms on Mother’s Day, and believe it or not, the colors even come into play. White carnations are said to be for honoring mothers who have passed away, while pink and red carnations are given to mothers still alive.
69 Kids and Counting
You might think you have a large family, but did you know that the highest officially recorded number of children from a single mother is 69?! This honor goes to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev of Russia, who between 1725 and 1765 gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, four sets of quadruplets, and seven sets of triplets!
Moms Come in All Ages
The miracles of motherhood come to women of all ages, but the record is 65 years old! On April 9, 2003, retired schoolteacher Satyabhama Mahapatra gave birth to a baby boy in India, making her the oldest woman to ever deliver a child.
